Big shout out to Child Nutrition Services (CNS)!
I can't say enough good things about how CNS has stepped up with food services during remote learning. Having meals available for all of our students, convenient locations for pickup throughout the community, and fresh food are a win for all.
Yesterday we picked up lunch for Cole and he was very happy to get the French Bread Cheese Pizza, whole wheat animal crackers, pears, and milk. It's a nice treat and a familiar memory of in-person school. After having a rough morning yesterday it was good to see him happier as he ate his school meal. I tried a little bit of everything, and I can honestly say the food was tasty, and the fruit and vegetables were fresh.
Child nutrition is one of the items I would like to focus on if elected to the board. Nutritious meals are the foundation to starting the day off right. As a parent volunteer at Carrillo Elementary I worked with our site CNS manager to improve the quality of the food as well as the selection. Myself along with another parent advocate were able to have Carrillo test out new tasty and healthy food options. In addition we were also able to pass along more information to parents to help them understand how the food was being prepared as well as the ingredients used so they were educated and could help their child select a healthy meal options.
If you haven't had a chance, visit the CNS section at www.smusd.org to view their department information and you can also download the Yum Yummy App on your phone to get a mobile menu for your child's school site.
Remember, that meals are currently free for all students of SMUSD. When you arrive show your child's school ID and receive one meal per student.
Thank you CNS!
